New smart metering plan for the UK

The Department of Energy and Climate Change has announced its plans for moving forward with the roll out of smart meters in the UK.

Full text of the announcement can be found on DECC's website but in brief, DECC are favouring a model for the roll out that allows individual energy suppliers to install and maintain meters to a common standard, while the communications infrastructure is installed and controlled by a national third party supplier.

DECC is now engaging in a three month consultation with the industry before announcing its final proposals on the roll out later this year.
