Electric Vehicles

The potential electrification of transport poses huge challenges to a smart grid. Even in small numbers, electric vehicles can create disruption for utilities.  Creating successful solutions for these problems requires a combination of  innovation and engineering skill, alongside a clear view of developments in the converging markets of smart grid and smart metering.  Sentec is uniquely placed to provide these solutions.

Smart grid challenges

At present charging points are produced in relatively small numbers and typically house an off the shelf electricity meter.  However, for larger quantities a bespoke metrology solution for EV charging infrastructure will provide more cost effective solutions for a number of specific functional challenges such as identifying car accounts, alerts on sudden disconnects or a utility disconnect.

Charge control

As numbers of EVs increase, co-ordinating the charging time to reduce peak loading will become increasingly important.  There are many practical design issues to be considered such as choice between no charge/reduced charge, or between grid and locally generated power.  These design decisions have implications for all parts of the system – car, charging infrastructure and local grid.

Vehicle to grid

The concept of using car batteries as an energy storage device is attractive but for it to be successful, vehicle solutions must be appropriately cost engineered, show reliability on both charge and discharge and have low impact on battery health.  They must also be controlled at some point in the network.
