Smart Electricity Meters
Easier, faster, more flexible smart meter designs.
Companies looking to develop new custom metering designs for smart meter roll outs need solutions that are accurate, durable, cost effective and easy to implement. The Mobius current sensor – at the heart of over 8 million smart meters worldwide – is all of these things.
Mobius is a high quality metrology solution that paves the way for easier, faster and more flexible meter designs, maximising return on initial engineering investment and providing plenty of design capacity for future metering upgrades. Its unique characteristics make it especially well suited for demanding applications such as high current measurement or in tamper-proof designs.
Outstanding measurement
Mobius meets the most stringent ANSI and IEC class 0.2% accuracy requirements. It provides excellent stability with long term calibration accuracy and close to zero temperature coefficient. Excellent linearity – accuracy well beyond standards - means easy and quick calibration.
The novel structure of the sensor provides total immunity from DC magnetic tampering and wide dynamic range. Mobius is particularly well suited to higher current applications with up to 320A in service today.
Cost effective designs
Mobius provides meter manufacturers with a proprietary solution that reduces design time and is easily integrated with standard metering ICs or system-on-chip (SOC).
Its unique design features ensure it can be adapted to fit with standard configurations of terminals, sockets, and disconnect switches, minimise the part count and mechanical design complexity, and simplify the assembly process. Its exceptional accuracy and low cost make it suitable for a wide range of meter types, allowing the design investment to be recouped across many products.
The sensor is made as an integral part of a completely standard printed circuit board, so manufacturers using Mobius have no supply chain problems. Licensees also benefit from protection from their competitors thanks to Mobius’s strong international patent portfolio.
Together, these features make Mobius the ideal solution for any manufacturer developing and launching new products in the highly competitive smart metering market.
Unique, protected metering advantage
In short, Mobius gives meter owners and producers an opportunity to produce a superior design more rapidly and at a lower cost across a full range of metering products. Where For product innovation is key and wherewith reduced design times are being reduced, Mobius allows companies to respond rapidly, with lower costs and with confidence that their design will be appropriate for future requirements.

- Streamlined supply chain – can be fabricated by any good quality PCB vendor
- Integration – works directly with many vendors’ metrology chips and SOCs
How it works
The patented Mobius sensor consists of a current carrying conductor (either a bus-bar or a circuit boardtrace) and a pickup formed from a convoluted coil fabricated on layers of a printed circuit board(PCB). The conductor runs parallel to the PCB in the vicinity of the pickup coil, in close proximity but electrically isolated.
