Sentec signs a fuel injector actuator licence for automotive natural gas fuel systems

Sentec Ltd., the specialist sensing and actuation technology provider, signed an agreement with Westport Innovations Inc., which provides Westport with global rights to use Sentec’s Exactus actuator and closed loop drive technology in select categories of natural gas fuel systems for automotive engines.

Westport is a world leader in direct injection technology for gaseous fuel systems. Sentec and Westport have been working together on developing natural gas injection solutions targeting the automotive market. Sentec’s Exactus actuation technology, which is covered by granted and pending patents, exhibits the performance associated with a piezo-electric actuator at a cost comparable to a solenoid.

Exactus technology provides:

  • part fuel valve lift and highly repeatable small fuel deliveries with smoother operation under city driving
  • higher flow capability allowing the injector to suit a broader range of engines
  • lower system cost than alternative actuation approaches

Market Opportunity for Direct Injection Technology In Automotive Applications

Exactus technology is highly relevant to many forms of direct injection (gasoline, diesel and gaseous fuels). Its controllable partial lift, rapid actuation, ability to provide highly repeatable small fuel injection deliveries, and compactness will enable injector designs and combustion strategies that meet future emission regulations and improve fuel efficiency, without further exhaust gas treatment or expensive piezo actuation.
